St Carlo Borromeus was the patron saint of bishops and cardinals. Carlo was the nephew of Pope Pius IV, who appointed Borromeus as cardinal and archbishop of Milan.
This engraving is in fabulous condition. Other similar Borromeus engravings are held at The British Museum.
