A mounted 1909 Edward VII full gold sovereign. Struck in London on the year the King opened the V&A museum. This sovereign was awarded as a golfing medal to John Watson McCash, a student at Clifton Bank School in Scotland. After leaving school McCash was later commissioned into the Black Watch. By October 1917 McCash was seeing action on the Western Front as a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps. On the afternoon of 23 November 1917, McCash was on a sortie over Bourlon Wood in France. The RFC pilots were engaged by several German aircraft from the famed Red Baron’s squadron. By the end of the bitter dog fight, two Royal Flying Corps aircraft had been shot down. One of these aircraft was piloted by John McCash. The body of John Watson McCash was never recovered. He is commemorated at the Arras Flying Services Memorial in France.
